About Rainbow Nation Kids

I grew up in rural KwaZulu-Natal and all the games we played as little kids are still some of my favourite childhood memories. I remember sitting in my granny’s kitchen next to the fire hearing stories and singing together with my cousins.

We sang nursery rhymes when we cleaned, when we washed clothes, when we took long walks to the river, or when we went herb picking with the next door aunties.

I was taught through singing, and it helped me learn faster, because melody records differently in the brain so I could remember information faster and easier.

I’m grateful that I can share these songs from my childhood with you.

My vision for the Rainbow Nation Kids album and this companion book is to help bring music back to schools – education through music.

The world is constantly changing and we right along with it. So it is important that as we change we don’t forget who we are, and one way of doing that is through storytelling and music.

Recording these songs with the students of Nyanganye Primary is the highlight of this entire project. I hope you enjoy the music as you sing along to the lyrics in our book.

Rainbow Nation is who we are as South Africans. It’s a wonderful love story of where we come from and how we go into the future. A promise of everything beautiful. Rainbow Nation Kids.

Thank you for singing along.

Anja Stoeckigt

Anja Stoeckigt is self-taught illustrator with an appreciation for the peculiar and the everyday beautiful. She loves eating Nutella straight out of the jar, taking long walks with her doggo, and cuddling on the couch with her hubby. When she was a little person she would constantly linger in the stationery section of any shop and dream of all the different designs she would one day create. Now that she is bigger, she gets to play and have lots of fun making goodies like these.
